Recently, Mountain Painting Company completed the restoration of this stunning Craftsman residence in Portland's historic Irvington neighborhood. Many of Portland's Craftsman homes were built between 1905 and 1925 using old-growth lumber that simply isn't available today.

That wood has survived over one hundred years of Portland rain, summer heat, seasonal expansion and contraction, and multiple generations of paint coatings.

In several areas, multiple generations of previous paint applications had lost adhesion, requiring considerably more restoration than initially visible from the ground.

Feather Sanding Every Transition

One hallmark of a quality restoration is something homeowners often never notice.

Every transition between bare wood and existing sound paint was carefully feather sanded.

Rather than leaving hard paint edges that telegraph through new coatings, each repair area was blended into the surrounding surface.

The result is an exterior that appears more uniform—not patched.

This process is extremely time-consuming, but it creates a dramatically smoother finished appearance while reducing future coating failure around repair areas.

Priming Bare Wood

Historic wood siding deserves more than simply covering it with paint.

Every exposed area of bare wood was properly spot-primed before finish painting.

Primer serves several critical purposes:

• Seals porous wood fibers
• Promotes maximum adhesion
• Creates uniform absorption
• Extends the life of the finish system

Skipping or rushing this step often leads to premature peeling within just a few years.

Restoring Historic Architectural Details

Craftsman architecture is defined by its details.

• Deep eaves
• Decorative brackets
• Exposed rafter tails
• Custom window trim
• Wide fascia boards

These elements require significantly more labor than modern construction.

Each individual component was carefully prepared by hand to preserve the home's original character while ensuring every surface would properly accept new coatings.
